The latest versions of three-wheelers are more robust and innovative, with redesigned carriages, broader wheels, and motorbike-style steering. Some newer models also have brakes on both the front and rear wheels, allowing better control. However, converted traditional rickshaws remain unsafe because their speed and braking systems are incompatible. These vehicles prone are to accidents, poorly proportioned and often operate without licenses. Initially, the traffic police ignored these new vehicles, but as their numbers multiplied, some action was taken against unlicensed e-rickshaws. Despite this, the government has shown limited interest in regulating their rapid growth. Authorities have assigned Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) to develop a standard e-rickshaws model, which has been completed, but approval has been delayed. Meanwhile unsafe three-wheelers continue to pose risks to public safety.
